MHTE signs MoU with UNEP on air pollution research

The Ministry of Housing Transport and Environment has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Resource Centre to jointly promote and continue the activities at the Hanimaadhoo Climate Observatory. The facility has been established in HDh. Hanimaadhoo to conduct research on Atmospheric Brown Cloud (ABC), Black Carbon (BC) and air pollution.

On behalf of UNEP, the MoU was signed by Director of AIT/UNEP Regional Resources Centre – Asia Pacific, Mr. Mahesh Pradhan and on behalf of the government of the Maldives, the MoU was signed by State Minister Mr. Adam Maniku. The signing was held at the Ministry of Housing, Transport and Environment. The event was attended by officials from ministry and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Hanimadhoo Climate Observatory, which was established October 2004, has been instrumental in collecting data of ABC, BC and other trans-boundary pollutants over the Indian Ocean. It is the only climate observatory in the world with long-term (more than 5 years) research data on ABC. It is also considered as the “crown jewel” for this research program according to UNEP officials.

The UNEP officials attending the event later met with Minister Hon. Mohamed Aslam and discussed areas of Maldives-UNEP coorporation.
