Maldives to Celebrate Earth Hour 2010

Maldives will be taking part in this year’s Earth Hour celebrations. Some of the activities planned include:

  • “No-vehicle Time”; from 4 p.m. until midnight on 27 March, driving motorised vehicles have been restricted in all inhabited islands of the Maldives.
  • Earth Hour Rally; begins at 4 p.m. in front of Social Centre and ends at Kalhuthuhkalaa Koshi. [Rally Route Map]
  • Earth Hour switching off; 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Television Maldives (TVM) will not be telecasting any programmes during Earth Hour. [Sponsored by STO Maldives]
  • Send text messages to all mobile users in the Maldives regarding Earth Hour [via Wataniya and Dhiraagu]
  • Various entertainment items throughout capital Male’ during the evening of 27 March.
  • Creating awareness about Earth Hour via TV and radio programmes;
    • Two officials from Environment Department will be appearing on the “Saturday Special” show to give information to viewers regarding Earth Hour and answer questions coming in (on 27 March 2010).
    • The winner of the SMS quiz on the “Saturday Special” show (on TVM) will receive a Panasonic air conditioner (which saves 60% energy). [Sponsored by Lintel Investments, the first Carbon Neutral company in the Maldives]
    • Two officials from Environment Department will be appearing on “Raaje Miadhu” show on TVM to give information regarding Earth Hour activities (on 25 March 2010).
