International Year of Biodiversity to be officially launched in the Maldives

The International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) is to be officially launched in the Maldives on the 18th of February, in a special ceremony held at Sultan Park, during which the IYB theme, logo and theme song will be launched by the Minister of Housing, Transport and Environment, Hon. Mohamed Aslam.

Prior to the launching day, the Environment Department, with the assistance of the Engineering Section of MHTE, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and members of Environs (Environment Club of CHSE), will be prepare a location map of all trees in Sultan Park and put displays of various information (local name, common name, scientific name, uses, history, etc.) about the trees in the park.

After the launching ceremony (until 4 p.m. that afternoon), students from various schools of Male’ will be visiting the park and will be guided through the park by Girl Guides and members of Environs. A number of fun/educational games/activities will also be conducted for the visiting students. After 4 p.m., the park will be opened for the general public.

The Environment Department welcomes any suggestions or ideas to make the day more colourful, and if you would like to take part or contribute to this event in any way, please email “biodiversity@environment.gov.mv”.

    Why not have a information kiosk to disseminate information on the upcoming trade ban on sharks. I think it would be a good place to spread awareness on that to sensitise people to the issue before it happens. Thank you.
