Vice President inaugurates the countdown to the activities of the International Day of Climate Action

Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has this afternoon inaugurated the countdown to the activities organised in the Maldives as part of an International Day of Climate Action, to be marked on October 24, initiated by 350.org.

Countdown began, at a ceremony held in front of the President’s Office on Boduthakurufaanu Magu, when the Vice President unveiled the logo of the activities.

Speaking after the unveiling of the logo, Vice President said the world was preparing for Copenhagen Summit to decide on actions to take to protect the planet.

He also noted that the activities in the Maldives would be held in cooperation with water sports associations and other associations and thanked everyone involved for their cooperation.

The aim of International Day of Climate Action was to bring to the attention of world leaders who participate in the Copenhagen Summit that the level of Carbon concentration in the atmosphere is at threatening levels.

350 parts per million is the highest level of carbon concentration in the atmosphere to sustain the livelihood on the earth. The current level of carbon concentration in the atmosphere is estimated to be at 387 parts per million. The aim of this activity is to bring this level down to 350 parts per million.

Among the activities organised in the Maldives to take part in the global action include a meeting of the Cabinet to be held underwater on 17 October.
