Vice President delivers a keynote speech for a UN interactive thematic dialogue on energy

Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has delivered a keynote speech for an interactive thematic dialogue entitled, “Energy Efficiency Energy Conservation and New Renewable Sources of Energy”, at the UN headquarters.

The event was attended by representatives of governments, United Nations agencies and the private sector.

In his speech Dr Waheed reiterated that the Maldives was the most vulnerable country to climate change, and said the Maldives needed urgent cooperation and assistance of the international community to protect the islands from environmental crises.

Speaking on the measures that the Maldives could take on climate change, the Vice President said the Maldives had decided to become carbon neutral within ten years.

Vice President also spoke on the effect of climate change on human rights and said both are inextricably linked.

In his speech, Dr Waheed thanked and congratulated UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon for his work on the issues of climate change. He expressed his confidence that the Maldives would continue to receive the full support of the international community in its goals towards carbon neutrality.
